About Whale Watching in Norway

Whales. These giants of the ocean visit the Norwegian coast every year, showing off for tourists and locals alike. In Norway, they are most commonly found along the Vesterålen coast during the summer. The most common whale to spot during the summer season is the sperm whale, but if you are lucky you may also see pilot whales, minke whales, humpbacks, dolphins and killer whales. By joining a whale safari, you will also be able to enjoy a magnificent scenery, lots of fresh sea air, and natural surroundings guaranteed to make a lasting impression.

Best place to see whales in Norway? In open sea it’s very difficult to see whales and orcas. You’ll get the best chances in between the fjords where there are a lot of fish on which the whales can hunt. Whale safaris in Norway are mostly arranged from Tromsø and Andenes (end of December to end of March).

Best Time to Visit

Good season: January - March

Whale watching in Norway can be done all year round but the best time is from the end of December to end of March. During the months of January and February is the time when the largest gathering of Killer Whales takes place, due to the vast numbers of Herring in the waters (e.g. around Lofoten Islands).
