Vatnajökull, the largest national park of Europe covers twelve percent of the total area of Iceland. Here, you find the mighty Dettifoss-waterfall. You can go for glacier skiing and ice caving at the largest icecap of the country.
When to go
- You can go only cross the park by 4X4 when the snow melts which is between July and September. The frinches and Northern lowlands however are open all year-round.
- The town of Hofn along the east coast is the most convenient hub for the national park. Vatnajökull covers most of the south eastern corner of Iceland. Route 1 follows the coast and provides the easiest access to the park.
