“ Great experience ”
We were so glad to have taken this trip - my partner suffers from motion sickness badly so we both took tablets and sea sickness patches and wore seabands(!). We were absolutely fine and my partner had almost zero symptoms even when the boat stopped and started rocking while we observed the whales. Dolphins were most fun to watch as they were playful. The staff were friendly and efficient. The skipper invited me to stand at the back to get better views, which was excellent. Highly recommended.

“ Fun sea hunt for whales, dolphin, and turtles! ”
Nuno and our Marine Biologist out of Terre Azul whale watch in Villa Franco do Campo were amazing spotters of sea life. We saw two types of whale, Sperm whale and Beaked Whale, pods of dolphins and sea turtles!! Worth a half day or even a full day!!

“ Excellent tour with an excellent company ”
The crew gave us a full safety briefing and then allocated life jackets before setting off for a 3 hours trip, our first sightings came after around 30 mins, that was some Risso's dolphins quickly followed by some Sperm Whales, then more and more. Vanessa gave us the information and the captain did an excellent job of spotting the whales and dolphins. We saw around 10 whales in three different groups, some sharks, several Loggerhead turtles and more dolphins playing before finishing it off with a trip around the island off Vila Franca de Campo. As we arrived back at the harbour the captain had a bit of fun with the boat. The crew are very responsible stopping where possible to pick up rubbish. Excellent, well worth the money for the trip.

“ Guide was great, captain not so much ”
This was a dream of mine, to go whale watching in the
Azores. We were very fortunate to see a pod of sperm whales, dolphins and a sea turtle! Our guide Vanessa was wonderful!
However the captain of our boat ruined the trip for me. He drove extremely fast so that we constantly hit the bottom of swells hard. He did this for extended periods of time as we went from where we saw the whales to the other side of the bay to a rock formation. He was forced to stop several times as children and adults became seasick. Then as we were returning to the dock he sped up the boat and did arcs causing the boat to tip from one side to another. He was smiling the whole time! Not fun or funny!

“ Whale and dolphin watch with speed boat ”
We went out for a whalewatch with Terra Azul, overall the boat was convenient and extremely fast (max 60 km/h). The company has wtacher crew on the island which are spotting the areas with whales so that the boat capatin knows where to go. Overll we saw 3-4 whales and numerous dolphins. In the end the small island opposite to Villa France de Campo was also presented.

“ Excellent Wildlife Viewing ”
I had been told by several people who have gone whale watching that the chances of a seeing a whale are very rare. I am not sure if we just got lucky, but we saw so many whales, dolphins, a sea turtle and Portuguese man of war. It was a highlight of our time in the Azores. The guides were great at explaining the different species and getting us close enough, but were also respectful and gave the animals space so we didn't stress them out. I think we saw about 6-8 whales including a calf and a male that jumped out of the ocean about 6 times so close to us! We saw hundreds of dolphins swimming around our boat and got to listen to them communicate. The ocean was calm, weather was beautiful and the animals magnificent. Highly recommend!

“ Best layover ever ”
Returning from Lisbon back to the US, I found myself with a ~12h layover in Ponta Delgada. The 2.4h whale watching expedition was the perfect way to take advantage of the most beautiful of afternoons. The guides were knowledgeable & engaging — and the hot tea (locally produced) offered at the end was a nice touch after a breezy day. Also included were waterproof windbreakers, which most of the group took advantage of. I learned so much about sperm whales.. and more!!

“ Perfect amount of time and really well done ”
We had a great time on this trip. For those wondering about seasickness, we all took Dramamine beforehand, and my husband, who’s the most susceptible, felt a little bit queasy at times but did not get actually sick. As others have mentioned, the staff are passionate about the animals and ocean conservation. The captain was almost psychic in his predictions about when the whales were going to breach or fluke, and although this was out of their control, we were fortunate enough to see many dolphins and whales.
The only reason I’m not giving it five stars is that we sat at the back of the boat, and between engine noise and the captain communicating with the spotters on land, we missed a lot of what the guide said—which made me sad because it seemed interesting. It would be really helpful for the guides to use some sort of battery-powered mic so everyone on the boat can hear.

“ Great company ”
Excellent experience. We was a little unlucky on the whale front but saw hundreds of dolphins all bow riding the waves which was brilliant to watch. Excellent briefing beforehand, felt in very safe and professional hands. They provide waterproofs which I highly recommend using if you wish to sit at the front of the boat, sitting at the front is so much fun but not if you have a bad back. We was the only boat out in the water. Their priority is the conservation and protection of the sea.

After reviewing multiple companies, comparing boats, and googling best time of day to see the whales, we settled on an afternoon tour with Terra Azul and could not have asked for a more magical experience.
Check in was incredibly organized. Safety briefing was concise and informative. We had a biologist on board with us who gave us information about the whales and dolphins. The boats are small enough and seating is arranged in a way that EVERYONE has a great view.
We had time with the sei whales to ourselves before Futurismo got word and came in with their gigantic boat.
3 sei whales and hundreds of dolphins and a super fun speed boat! Could not ask for more!

“ Great experience ”
The whale watch tour was a great experience. We were staying in Vila Franca, so the walk to the marina was very easy. The building is clearly marked and there is a lot of staff to help with registration and to answer questions. If you are there early, there is an icecream shop, a souvenir shop and a bar/cafe all right next to the Terra Azul front. The staff is very friendly and clearly passionate about the work they do. They are knowledgeable about the sea life and really work hard at making sure that everyone on the watch gets to see all different kinds of wildlife. On the day we went, we saw a sea turtle, two species of dolphin, and a squid that had floated up the surface of the water. I know that within the next few days of our watch, there was a sperm whale sighting. You will definitely see all types of wildlife!
The only word of caution I will give is that the seating on the boat is a bit different - you sit on a bench "horse riding" style. The boat is very stable, but for those who get sea sick, I am not sure that it would be a pleasant ride.

“ Amazing experience! ”
We had the most perfect day out on the water today. The water was calm and glassy. As soon as we left the port we came across a risso dolphin. We then encountered two curious sperm whale calves. We saw more sperm whales close to us and on the horizon. We came across two bottlenose dolphins and then a pod of 16 pilot whales including calves. We loved hearing the whale clicks on the radio. To top it off we saw a loggerhead turtle, beautiful shearwaters and Portuguese man o war jellyfish. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable about marine life, friendly and passionate. They respected the whales / dolphins by not getting too close and also made sure to pick up plastic bags that we unfortunately encountered. Very professional and well run tour! We had the most magical time and feel very lucky! Thank you! Definitely book tours with this company!!

We were lucky and got to see sperm whales (males and females, a calf) as well as bottlenosed dolphins. The crew was conscientious about explaining the concept of responsible viewing, and also picked up some plastic debris that was floating. They took care not to get too close to the animals. The crew took good care of our safety. They spoke English, Portuguese and German. The amount of time was perfect.

“ Amazing experience ”
This was an amazing experience for my partner and I. We've seen whales off the coast of Iceland before but never had we seen dolphins so close. There was first a pod of common dolphins feeding and we were so close we could almost touch them. Then we saw some bottle nosed dolphins jumping more out of the water, and then we sped off quite a long way to see a sperm whale. The speed of the boat going over the waves took a while to get used to, and it may not be for people who get sea sick easily. My advice: Don't eat much for breakfast and go for a wee before you get on the boat as you may be out for quite a while! Still, worth every single cent and I wholeheartedly recommend it. The guide especially was excellent and spoke in both Portuguese and perfect English.

We came to the Azores spefically to go whale watching and picked this particular company as they advertise a 98% chance of seeing whales. We came in the migration season, giving oursleves the best possible chance, unfortuately there were no whales around to see that afternoon yet they still took us out having spotted none fron their spotters - asked for a discount for a second trip but were refused. Hope you have better luck.

“ Saw Bottleneck Dolphins and Sperm Whales ”
We did a morning tour (told to be the calmest waters) and it was delightful. The guide and skipper provided tips on how to avoid/deal with sea-sickness but it wasn't a problem at all during the trip. We saw a pod of over 100 dolphins and two sperm whales. The company cares a lot about conservation and part of the profit goes towards those efforts.

“ We saw whales and dolphins! ”
On the 4th of June we did a sea tour to observe some wildlife.
The land briefing about the environment and safety were very professional. Not only they explained the different species but also kept expectation low as nothing is guaranteed in nature.
We were assigned in a 28 pax, 600hp, boat with a experienced skipper and Vanessa as a guide.
Both performed top notch explaining all the procedures and even collected one piece of plastic drifting offshore from the middle of the ocean.
We were quite lucky to see common dolphins, roazs and a group of 3 Sui whales.
Before going back to the port we did a tour around the Ilheu.
Loved the experience and the professionalism of the crew both inland and on the boat was key.

“ Best Half Day Whale Watching & Islet Boat Tour ”
I have never been on a whale watching tour so I don't have a point of reference but everything was magnificent with this company. The boat was in excellent condition.
The team was super friendly and knowledgable. Our guide had over 15 years of experience and had only be in Azores for 5 months but seemed to have been there his whole life! He was also very kind to the family with a little girl in the back who was struggling as the boat goes very fast which I can see being scary for small children. He even translated in Spanish for the little girl. The skipper was also very helpful in finding the marine life.
We saw 3 bottlenose dolphins pods, one was even a large group of many pods and over 100 individuals, plus there was a couple calves as well! On top of dolphins which were the most fun too see, we saw 1 sperm whale, 1 loggerhead turtle and many jellyfish that looked like plastic trash. The guide & skipper also picked up actual trash on the way back. They also said they would keep an eye out on a dolphin showing ribs and were very respectful, keeping their distance and leaving when the marine life didn't want to interact with us.
What also sets this tour apart from the rest, is that it goes around the Islet of Vila Franca vs. the rest depart from Ponta Delgada aka no Islet. This is a very small portion of the tour but very interesting to see & learn about.
I learned so much whole time and couldn't have been happier with this tour!

“ Amazing crew and marine life!! ”
Great whale watching operation! The zodiac was a lot of fun, the captain was excellent and we couldn't have asked for a better guide! I've been on several similar tours in Canada and this was one of the best I've done. First, the location in Vila Franca is, in my opinion, better than the ones in Ponta Delgada: less crowded and the coast is nicer, plus you get to see the islet, which is not accessible otherwise off season. Then, the guide: very knowledgeable, helpful explanations but never disruptive so you can enjoy the view, and she spoke at least 4 languages! Finally, the animals: we got to see a sea turtle, a very playful pod of common dolphins and a more quiet one of bottlenose, and a sperm whale that graced us with a beautiful dive in the end. You are almost guaranteed to see dolphins, but whales is never a 100% guarantee. The crew really try their best though, and they coordinate with watchtowers on land to find them. There are many whales that are residents all year round, like the sperm whale, and you can also see other species that migrate through the area from April to October, like blue, fin and sei whales. All in all, you can't go wrong with this tour! I'd go back in a heartbeat :)

“ A rough ride and big fun ”
We did two trips with Terra Azul. On both trips the sea was very rough and the waves were quite big.
We got sprayed by the waves several times, but had great fun. It is wise to use the raincoats and trousers that are supplied. We saw lots of common delphins. They were jumping. That was great. We didn't spot any whales. That was a little bit disapointing, but we are aware of the fact that they are wild animals and that sightings can't be planned.
The crew was very friendly.

“ They have not put enough effort to find a whale at all ”
I am whale lover from my childhood and I know a lot about them. This is why we came to Azores in the time when the whales are actually here - April and May are the most popular months for them to passing by.
We enjoyed Azores a lot and would recommend visiting it to anyone. But if you are coming with an intention to see a whale especially then this organisation may not be the best.
- not enough info provided about the whales - differences about them, behaviour, psychology
- driving with a speed boat across will reduce the opportunity to see a whale
- they don't use any radar or sonar - after asking them how they find whales they said they have a method of observing the ocean from the pick of the mountain by two guys (so the whole trip depends on these two guys who fall asleep I guess on our tour since the microphone they are using to communicate with the boat was silent for the whole tour)
- after finding a group of dolphins we just stayed there for 30 min. 30 min of a time on a trip where you are 2 hours on the water is a lot (1 hour is preparation - watching a movie, providing info about the boat by skipper).
- we drove long the beach - too close to the coast - whales never come that close or very very very rare
- after seeing dolphins I've asked a lady if they have any spots to see a whales regularly and she replied: "That is the nature, they can be anywhere".. - obviously I know that :), my question relied on her skills but then I realised that not seeing whales is totally normal for them and they do not even try to find them! After 30 min on that boat I realised I made a mistake and that this trip is more for ones who are 1) first time on the boat, 2) for ones who do not have a whale watching experiences, 3) who are satisfied with seeing a cost from the sea and some birds, dolphins maybe.
- the crew felt "no sorry" for us (or my 110€ for couple) after seeing us unhappy with the tour, they could apologise or showed some effort again in order to "clear the air"
- our weather conditions were fine, the sea was calm so even with the help of these two guys sitting on the rock and observing the sea I believe we could find a whale if the whole team would be eager to find them. I know the nature is unpredictable but what is sad is that they do not put any eagerness in what they do (probably because of mass of people coming there).
So, everything depends on your expertise and wishes. If you are satisfied with the cruising on the sea and relying on the nature - go ahead. There are actually few % to see a whale, of course.

“ Cancelled!!! But Good service. ”
Sadly after great anticipation, a long safety breifing, fitting the life jackets and Queing, the trip was cancelled, They said the weather was bad and the whales weren’t near the shore. Luckily we got a full refund and amazingly got our pick up to Terra Azule refunded which I thought was very nice of them and still took us back to the hotel in which we were staying at, the hotel we were staying at wasn’t even close so it wasn’t like it was a quick journey for them. All in all I think it’s quite annoying that they got us to watch the safety breifing, put on the life jackets and even cue up ready to get in the boat only to tell us we can’t go but there service was good and if you were staying longer you could have changed the date to a day when it was good wether instead of getting a full refund.

I liked the Tour and the people are young and friendly. But If i compare this one to the other one we did; on a larger slower boat, i prefer the other one. We booked a 3 hour whale watching tour and although we did not see any whales we had a great time and we did get to see a large pod of dolphins. We checked into the Terra Azul office at Vila Franca do Campo for the late afternoon tour. We were greeted happily by a nice young woman who took the time to chat with us. After check in, the marine biologist and skipper went over what to expect, safety procedures and how to put on the life jackets; we also saw 2 very short films. After the life jackets were distributed it was time to get on the boat, we stayed near the back for a little less action than the front of the boat and also so my husband could take pictures without disturbing others. Miguel our skipper showed my husband where to stand to get the best shots. We saw lots of dolphins up close and we motored all around the outside of Princess Ring Islet. The marine biologist told us facts about the Islet and the marine life around us. We were very happy with our Terra Azul experience and will definitely use them again when we visit Sao Miguel in the future. We highly recommend Terra Azul.

The staff was kind and what I personally liked was their approach to nowadays situation of water pollution. It is very responsible of them that they are raising awareness amongst people all around the world, which I am thankful for. I would highly recommend this experience for people of different ages.
PS Keep the oceans clean! This is our planet and we have to take care of it.

“ Professional & best whale watching ”
I strongly recommend them as they compromise to take you to another trip in case you don't see any dolphins or whales. There's always a biologist accompanying and explaining the animals and birds behaviour. We had the company of a Danish biologist (sorry I don't remember her name) who gave us lots of information. Captain Miguel was also really nice and chatting. We saw three different families of dolphins, greatfull experience as they were really amusing. We also saw 2 whales which are difficult to be seen, we were really lucky.

“ Great experience ”
We did 2 trips with Terra Azul, the first was whale and dolphin watching and we were lucky enough to see 4 Sperm whales including a calf and too many dolphins to count. Our second trip was swimming with dolphins was an absolutely amazing with us entering the sea with snorkelling gear and seeing and hearing the dolphins in their natural environment. Not so much a close encounter but certainly felt they were willing to share their world with us. All the staff were great and really cared for the animals and environment. Both children (11 and 13 thoroughly enjoyed too).

We found Azores Whale Watching TERRA AZUL on the internet recommended by many customers, We trusted the revues on Tripadvisor and we were not disappointing at all .
The staff is professional and friendly, with a sense of humor and flexibility when needed. We were lucky to see sperm whales and sie whales together with a couple of dolphin types including a large gang of them.
Great value for money.

“ Full day whale watching tour ”
Amazing tour! Our guides were knowledgeable, friendly and funny! The boat ride out was so much fun. We were very close to the dolphins. Excited to see a couple whales too, as it was the end of their migration season. Had lunch and took the ferry to beautiful islet of rings where we spent the afternoon snorkeling! Such a great experience. Highly recommend this tour.

“ Good organisation - little success ”
Good organisation. Instead of whale watching - it was dolphin watchin - and the guide knew it from the very beginning. At least you get some suggestions about how not to pollute the sea and you get to see some of the spactacular landscape in the area,
Some thing that upset me most, was the permanent advertising on my mobile phone while reading facebook and one newspaper. There must have been a cookie set. And this was very upsetting, since I have already visited the whalewhatchin - and I stil got all the ads.

“ Amazing, unique and so much fun ”
We did the whale watching and swimming with dolphins. The whale watching was great. We were on a brand new boat with the Dutch guide Milou. She's a marine biologist, so she could tell a lot about the dolphins and whales we were seeing. We even saw pilot whales! We learned a lot about the marine wildlife. The dolphins would swim along with the boat, like it was a game for them. It was so much fun. After this trip we went swimming with dolphins. It was amazing, it was such a great and unique experience. Our skipper Tiago knew how to handle the boat so you could easily get into the boat after the snorkeling. Also, Tiago did his best to get us to the best places for seeing and swimming with dolphins. Milou was very patient with us and helped us looking the right way so we could see the dolphins while being in the water. Thank you so much for the great experiences!

Amazing experience! In the morning we did the whale watching; very kind crew with a lot of knowledge. Also, very respectful to nature. In the afternoon we dis the swimming with dolphins. This was a truely amazing experience. Our guide Tim was so kind and made us at ease before we got on the boat. On our way to dolphins we stopped several times to pick up some plastic waste which was floating around: so nice! The swimming itself was really special: we had a great day considering weather. It was sunny and the sea was calm. There was a lot personal attention because it was just a small boat. We were really lucky to see two seaturtles as well + they brought us up to an extra snorkling sight! 5/5, our best day of the entire trip!

Nice giude and a really cool skipper (wavesurfing).
They were very interested in that we saw whales and dolphins and we noted their enthusiasm for the animals and nature and the respect for those.
When we saw rubbish in the ocean we took it in the boat...really attentive.
Driving with the boat is much fun and watching these incredible creatures is so stunning.

“ Great Times with A Great Company! ”
My wife, son (10), and I enjoyed two separate trips with TA. First, a whale and dolphin watching tour where we were fortunate to see several juvenile sperm whales and three different species of dolphins. The skipper did a great job keeping us and the marine life safe, and our onboard biologist was very knowledgeable. Our second adventure was a dolphin swimming tour, which was a blast. We were able to experience a pod of 250+ common dolphins feeding and doing what dolphins do. A big thanks to the TA staff!!! We can’t wait to come back.

“ Good staff, disappointing tour ”
I booked two days of dolphin swimming in the morning and whale watching in the afternoon. The first day got cancelled due to bad weather conditions. This is always a possibility of course, though I find it strange that when I walked into the harbor of Ponta Delgada all the other tour companies went whale watching. Luckily I could go with one of them. The second day started bad with the company forgetting they were supposed to pick me up from my hotel (45 minutes late!). The dolphin swim was a bust, though at no fault of Terra Azul, as I got stung by a jellyfish. They responded adequately, brought me back to the harbor and treated the sting with ointment. In the afternoon I was thankfully fine and joined the whale watching tour. I hate the zodiacs. They're the same for every company I have been with, but not comfortable AT ALL. The waves were quite high, we got soaked and we had no way to protect sensitive equipment (even though they do have water proof bags which were used for the dolphin swim). I had to protect my camera by wrapping it in my coat and practically hunching my entire body over it in order to prevent it from getting wet.
The spotted dolphins were cute and awesome, but I would prefer a bit more comfort.

“ Adrenaline rush ”
I had a chance to go whale watching with Terra Azul and it was amazing. We left the port and swam away from the shore for about 10 minutes until we started seeing dolphins swiming around us and it's quite a sight to see. Another great thing about this trip was the speed of the boat and how it was jumping on every wave (props to the driver). Trully an adrenaline rush

“ A bid disappointment ”
Whale watching is a misleading statement. After we paid we were told the whales pass April and may. There was meant to be native sperm whales but even before the boat left we were told we wouldn't see them as they were the other side of the island. We saw dolphins but all on the opposite side of the boat with 2 rows of heads in or view and the pilot wouldn't turn the boat. But we didn't go to see dolphins. I doubt they often see whales so it's a 60€ con. They dress it up in the name of caring for the ecology. But they happily take payment to let people swim with dolphins and yet our guide told us it upset the dolphins as they had young. It was a massive disappointment and waste of €120. If you don't see whales please let others know. So they can decide if they want to pay that much just for dolphins.

The crew were very respectful of the whales, keeping their distance and waiting. We also saw 4 species of dolphins, which were very playful. “ Fantastic whale & dolphin watching + trip to the Ilhéu de Vila Franca ”
My partner and I had a fantastic time having booked the full day tour on the 10th June. In the morning, we were part of a larger group that all went out for 3 hours on the boat. They had staff on the shore as lookouts so the staff knew where the whales and dolphins were currently located. We got to see sperm whales, a fin whale, bottle nose dolphins and a sea turtle. The guide was very knowledgeable and the skipper was great too. It was fast and bumpy at times, but we didn’t find this a problem at all. On the way back, the skipper did a full circle around the Ilhéu de Vila Franca as well. Because we had booked the full day, we were then directed to a restaurant nearby where we had a 3 course meal, before returning to the marina to pick up snorkelling gear and tickets for the ferry to the island. We could stay as long as we liked as long as we got back before the last ferry at 6pm. All in all a brilliant day. The staff were lovely and would highly recommend their tours!

We booked a whale watching trip with this company, before travelling to The Azores. We went out for 3 hours in a Zodiac type boat( not for more infirm people, as it is a small boat and can be bumpy in rough weather. Also you may feel sick, so pills recommended!)We quickly reached the whale area and were so lucky to see sperm Whales, fin Whales and even blue whales.Amazing.We saw lots of blows and a couple of dives. We also saw a turtle, which they tagged. They are a very ethical company, who never harass the animals and have marine biologists, who have animal welfare at heart. The sheer joy and enthusiasm of the guides made this a stand-out experience. We were so glad to go with them. This was an amazing trip, which was worth every penny.

Thank you Terra Azul for this amazing experience! The staff was very, very friendly en helpfull. They also seem to know everything there is to know about marine wildlife. Our children, aged 6 and 7 had the best time. We were lucky to see a blue whale and lots of dolphins (common dolphins and bottelnose dolphins) and Portuguese man o’ war. The boat Terra Azul uses is a fairly big Zodiac. It’s fast but also relatively comfortable (no seasickness for anyone aboard) and comes highly recommended for family’s with children: the boat really allows you to get close and personal with marine wildlife and the speed makes the trip exciting for children. The staff was constantly checking everyone was ok.

My boyfriend and I joined the Terra Azul whale watching tour in April 2018.
While the boat ride is thrilling in itself - chapeau to the skipper - we also saw lots of dolphins and 2 blue whales, which came out of the water 3 times in a row!!!! It was absolutely amazing.
The guide was extremely informant and ready to help anyone at any moment, if there was the need for.
We had to travel and wait a bit for the whales, but the stuff did their best to locate them while being very cautious to keep enough distance and not disturb the animals. The staff is very aware and protective of the sea and its inhabitants. They have great respect for it and I love that they made us aware as well.

“ Highly recommended tours ”
We went to the Azores with Whale watching as a priority , I booked this company and one other in advance, the other wrote a few days before the holiday to say his boat had no permit to go out, so we stayed with Terra Azul. One the day of our trip the weather wasn't great and the spotter could not see anything so we were cancelled. No problem, we were automatically booked to the next day and an option on the day after that as well.
The next day it was all good, we had good weather and saw Fin Whales, but it was the skipper and the guide that made it special. They worked very hard to find animals and we travelled many miles searching and listening to the spotter on land and eventually found two Fin Whales, awesome. The boat ride its self is a great thrill and the skipper NueNue? was great. We enjoyed it so much that we went the next day as well, different team this time but again searched until we found a load of Common Dolphins. Their knowledge and very friendly approach is so nice, the safety is spot on and you get a cup of local Green tea on your return ! we were staying in Ponta Delgarda , but its only a 25 minute drive and easy. These are the guys to go with.

“ A bit disappointing ”
We were really excited about this excursion, as we had been whale watching on a zodiac before and loved it.
Our day started out a bit stressed as we had a hard time finding the Terra Azul location (we booked through email and there wasn't much direction). Once there, the zodiac wasn't exactly what we expected; it was sort of like a banana boat where you straddled a seat.
We saw a few dolphins feeding during the first half hour, but they disappeared and the guides decided to take us further out into the ocean to find whales. At this point the ocean became ROUGH; of course, this wasn't the guide's fault, but we felt that we were pushed too far. The little zodiac went straight out for about 45 minutes nonstop, crashing over huge waves. People were vomiting over the side of the boat. I never get seasick, but I felt so ill that I couldn't wait for the trip to be over. After all that, we didn't even see anything. No sounds on the radar....nothing. So we turned around and made the long trip back to the dock.
Again, the ocean conditions were not the guide's fault (and I will say that the guide still provided good nature interpretation despite the lack of whales). However, I do feel that we should not have gone so far out into the ocean when many people were clearly sick. Perhaps before we went out they could have warned us that the conditions were poor. We spent a lot of money on this, and my eyes were shut the whole time trying to will myself to feel less nauseous.
We definitely felt that we were being taken advantage of a bit as tourists. There were a lot of other whale watching boats out at the same time as us, and it all just felt a bit fake. My advice would be to think twice before booking a whale watching trip in any touristy location, because you'll likely end up a bit disappointed.

We made the reservation online through email and then when we got to Ponta Delgada we made our way to Villa de Franco to confirm. It was a good thing we did because there was a little confusion on the dates that we were going. It was all worked out very smoothly and they were very helpful! The whale watching trip itself was amazing! Our guide was bouncing all over the place answering questions and giving us information on the different animals we got to see. We saw two types of dolphin and a Brydes whale and her calf which is rare that time of year.
After the tour, our guide recommended restaurants for us to go to and they were great! I would definitely recommend!

“ Great Tour with very experienced guides and respectful for the animals ”
The Tour with Terra Azul was a very great experience. We could see dolphins and whales. The boats the company are small speed boats, so we were about 22 people on the boat and everybody had a great view. If you get sea sick easily- try to sit more in the back of the boat.
The company works together with professional spotters, so they are informed where exactly the animals can be found.
The guide was a marine biologist, so she could tell us a lot about the whales and dolphins.
To not disturb the animals, they wouldn't go too near to the animals with the boat and we went off to another spot, when a second ship arrived.
First our trip was planned for another day, but the weather was not good enough, so resceduled for another day. Therefore it is alwaus reasonable to book the whale watching at one oF the first holiday days, in case this happens.

“ At Last ”
We have been whale and dolphin watching for well over 30 years and have seen a wide range of animals. During this time we have longed to see sperm whales to add to our sightings. This team went out of their way to provide their customers with the best that could be achieved. Whereas we had been led to expect a tour of about 2 hours, what we actually experienced was almost 4 hours of enchanting and exciting sightings, including sperm whales. When, towards the end of our expected tour sperm whales had been spotted, they did not hesitate to extend things to include this. In the we had a tour that needed us to call in at Ponta Delgada to refuel. We are very grateful to the team for this.

“ Birthday surprise was wonderful! ”
The whole experience was very good, from the booking at the shop the day before to the trip itself. We were given a briefing just before we set out on what we might encounter and, while we didn't spot any whales, we did see four different types of dolphin. Our on-board guide was helpful and enthusiastic, providing detailed background info about the different species and their habits, and the team appeared keen that we should see as much as possible. But what really made our day was the surprise birthday treat for my husband three-quarters of the way through the trip. I won't give away what it was (in case it's repeated for other visitors!) but it was a very special addition that we really appreciated, and demonstrated Terra Azul's willingness to go that extra mile. We talk about it a lot! Thanks again for making our whale watching trip so wonderful.

“ Whale watching without whales aware... ”
Good folks, good service. No issues with how they are prepared or presented. Only that whales do not know when humans want to watch them... Seen dolphins, wanted to swim with them however got advised against it by the crew, seen and captured a tortoise which was nature's surprise and compensation for whale non-watching. Would have been a five-star rating if it weren't for the missing whales...

“ Dolphin & Whale watching at its best ”
we selected this company based on multiple feedback we have received from our hotel and also from other guests. The experience by farm at all even exceeded expectations. Starting with the welcoming reception on the phone by Ana as well as the customer oriented service when we got there. Our driver Nuno and our guide Joyce from the Netherlands- on an internship here and studying to be a marine biologist were both exceptional. If you enjoy high speed and safe boat trips - which are the best vessels - even if you suffer from sea sickness - coupled with the best chance of seeing whales and dolphins - THEN this is the place to BOOK :-)

“ Whale watching with low ecological footprint ”
Great company to do a whale watching tour. They try to limit the ecological impact by using rather small boats (10 pers) and donating (i.e. each tourist doing the watching) for tree plantation/sustaining at the portuguese mainland as well as a bee-population cultivation program. Each boat has a well-educated maritime biologist on board for providing in-depth information. We saw 2 kinds of dolphins (a lot) and 5 spermwhales, the only whale species frequently around this time of the season. Enjoyed it, especially knowing you're impacting the environment as low as possible doing this kind of activity! Keep on going guys!!

We went whale watching with Terra Azul. The crew was very competent and told us a lot about the different species that we saw. They were able to locate a brydes wahle and four different kinds of dolphins. The boat is a larger zodiac type speedboat, compared to the slower two story boat of the other company. We went three times whale watching and we swam on time with the dolphins. All four tours were fantastic! Being on the water surrounded by dolphins or spotting a glance of whales is an undescribable feeling! Moreover, the employees at Terra Azul are very kind and passionate about nature and conserving sea wildlife, They collect whale and dolphin data and they share their knoweledge with their clients. Although it could happen that for example whales are difficult to find, I think you should realise that that's nature;)

“ Unforgettable ”
Swiming with dolphins and going for whales with Terra Azul is a must if you go to Sao Miguel. These two trip we did with them will last in our memories. We had lot of fun and emotion in the water with 300 dolphins, and during our second trip we have observed 5 different species of dolphins, pilots whales and sperm whales. We've gone for whales watching before with other companies elsewhere but Terra Azul is really different with very good skils, enjoying team and perfect place. We deeply thank Marine for his enthousiasm and to jump in the water with us Miguel for his friendly behaviour, Rebecca, her happiness to see all these species was a true pleasure for us. Nuno for the excellent drive and fun he provided to us ! Grear team ! We highly recommend Terra Azul

“ Very good ”
Heard great things about this company and wanted to check it out. Really enjoyed the small group size and boat-style, though it was more sporty than some of the other options. Line up early so you can get an outside seat. Saw a few whales, lots of dolphins. Highly recommend for whale watching. (Swimming with dolphins, however, seemed to be more challenging bc once the swimmer jumped into the frigid water, the dolphins would swim off. So I was glad we just did the whale watching.) *Visited late June/early July 2016 but trip advisor didn't have that date as an option anymore.

“ Amazing times with amazing people! ”
I've been on several Whale Watching tours in my day. Some tend to stand out because of the people that work there. Terra Azul had to be the best company I have ever gone with. Not only were they located very close to where the animals were, but the staff was warm, friendly, and very knowledgable. They made sure every one was able to see and had a good time. They respected the animals when other boats approached, we headed away as to not add stress to the animals. I can't wait to go back to Sao Miguel and go back out on the water with this fabulous company!

“ Great way to spot whales and dolphins from up close ”
We were led by a small team of enthusiastic people, some of which are also employed as professional oceanic researchers. They have a LOT of knowledge about sea life are also very passionate about it.
The sea trips are all done in small boats, which keep radio contact with special whale watching outposts on the shore to get the whale's most recent locations. This was working pretty well for our group, although it did take some time before we actually encountered some whales.
The boat ride was a bit bumpy, since the driver needs to act quickly every time a whale location is being updated. But for us it only added to the fun and it's absolutely safe too. In our opinion this is the best way to view everything from as close as possible. Highly recommended.

“ Ultimate whale watching tour ”
A great morning on the water with this knowledgeable crew! We saw multiple types of dolphin and 2 types of whales. Fin and Sperm and it couldn't have been a better experience. Not one complaint about this outfit.
A couple things to know though that might be worth while, it is an inflatable boat that holds 20 to 30 people? So for those who tend to get seasick or motion sickness you will definitely FEEL the ocean more on these. But nowadays with motion sick pills that don't make you drowsy, like Dramamine's ginger based pill, I would just take 2 before heading out.
Once you book online they ask you to make a bank transfer to secure the reservation, I thought that was a little weird with credit cards and all being so easy to use these days. The lady i emailed back and forth with was fantastic and she assured they do this for all clients and so we did it and no problems at all.
The crew was amazing, the captain was in constant communication with the spotters who put us right on the whales and the guide was very knowledgeable on all the species we encountered. Great experience for all ages

“ Great dual experience! ”
We did the whale watching and island visit tour and had a great time! Saw whales and tons of dolphins on the tour without ever leaving sight of the island. The snorkeling off of Vila Franco de Campo was also one of our favorite experiences of our trip.

It was a really great experience. Even the boat trip itself was amazing. We were really lucky as well as we saw 2 kinds is whales and 4 kinds of dolphins and a turtle. The guides were well prepared and really kind. We also got a present for our honeymoon (message in a bottle) that was very sweet. Guys pls continue what you are doing, cause you are awesome.

“ Bring waterproof trousers ”
After we had a great time whale watching on Faial, we also decided to try it on Sao MIguel. Terra Azul seemed like a good company especially after we saw the endorsement video by Prof John Lawton.
The organization at the start was a bit patchy. Health and safety advice as regards the boat and suncream was good, but clothing advice was off the mark. It's always cold at sea and can (obviously) be wet. No waterproof trousers were provided at the start because 'you wont get wet' and we were not encouraged to use the waterproof coats that the company made available. Needless to say it was a bit choppy, and we got absolutely soaked at the front. There was also a good deal of milling around at the start and finally we went out even though I don't think any whales had been sighted at that stage. Another spotter might have helped to increase the sea coverage.
The boat is a largeish RIB which allows you to get close to the whales quickly before they dive. Seating is pretty comfortable but the seats are in rows of 3 rather than pairs throughout most of the boat, meaning you don't always get the best view of the whales. The skipper was very good at manoevring the boat and we got some very close views. Unfortunately the whales (3 fin whales - ok by Azorean standards) were always on the opposite side of the boat to me, meaning that viewing and photographing them was often tricky.
Staff were knowledgeable and gave good information, but were often difficult to hear towards the front of the boat.
So, a good experience but could have been better in several areas.

“ Great company for Whale Watching! ”
Joined Terra Azul for a trip end of April. They have very friendly and competent staff, giving a short introduction before the tour. Speaking German, Dutch, English and Portuguese and probably many more languages. We were lucky on our trip seeing Orcas, Blue and Fin Whales as well as dolphins. Their marine biologist on board told us more about the whales and their behavior when we saw them! Would absolutely recommend Terra Azul!

“ Loved the passion of our marine biologist guide ”
We saw a blue whale a couple of times, not so close up but enough to get a sense of awe just from the sheer size of those animals. Then on the way back we encountered a pod of bottlenose dolphins who swam all around and with the boat, which was really amazing.
Milou, our marine biologist tour guide, was really lovely, with this quiet passion for marine biology. She told us all about the animals in a way that felt fresh and direct, as if telling it all for the first time, which is so nice compared to the canned briefings you sometimes get on tours like this. Then back on land she took lots of time - like more than 30 mins - to answer all our many questions.
We chose Terra Azul because they looked like the least commercial outfit on the island, and that's how it felt on the tour. Highly recommended!
