Venado Caves

Book now

Cave exploration is usually an activity reserved for highly skilled climbers known as speleologists. However Venado Caves are safe enough and easy to access so everyone can enjoy them. They are located approximately 3km east of the town with the same name and about 45 minutes away from La Fortuna, San Carlos.

The caves were formed during the Miocene period, 15 or 20 million years ago. For many years they were under sea level and surfaced due to tectonic movements.

Guatusos aborigines were the first to discover this place. Limestone rocks, stalactites, stalagmites and corals, form most of the rocky halls and tunnels. The whimsical stone formations are constantly shaped by an underground stream.

The length of the tour into the caves is 1 ½ hour. During this time we will find marine fossils, and also bats, spiders and crickets.

Because we will have to walk through the river and waterfalls from the upper part of the cave, we recommend our customers to take light clothes, hiking shoes and extra clothes to be able to change when they finish the exploration. The equipment for the tour will be provided to each client.
