“ We Saw Whales !!! ”
Bit pricey but what's not in Iceland... However Elding were great, boat easy to find, staff were friendly and knowledgeable and we saw 2 types of whales. Only reason I gave 4 out of 5 is that the skipper seemed to be focusing on the competitors and rather than heading out to find specimens in his own waters he seemed to be sitting back, watching the other boats and heading for them when whales appeared near their craft.
It was a great experience which the whole family enjoyed.
Useful tip: Even if the weather is fine in town, take advantage of the suits they offer as once out on the open sea it's freezing with the wind cutting through you from the arctic.

“ Amazing experience ”
I went to the tour operated by Special Tours on a bright sunday morning. The guide - a British marine biologist - was very good and clearly loved her job. The weather was excellent and we had a lot of luck! Saw two mink whales and several dolphins jumped in front of our boat. Amazing day

“ spotted whales and dolphins ”
We took 9 AM trip on 24th July. It was raining and was not a bright day! We wore that heavy suit to withstand cold on the upper deck and we reached that place where all other whale watching boats gathered. We could see some 5 or 7 whales, just diving for less than 5 seconds! Then he will come to the surface after 20 minutes! It was very difficult and one need to be alert all the time! Even then, one cannot be sure, whether he saw or spotted a whale for sure! We saw some dolphins and they keep coming up on the surface and play! Easy to spot.
We did whale watching in Indian Ocean in Sri Lanka at some 25% of the price we gave here! Actually, the glimpses of whales showing up for less than 3 seconds, is not worth the money spent.
Maybe, an aquarium with captive whales, would have been a wiser decision! But I am not blaming the company. They did a fantastic job! They gave lot of " knowledge " on seaworld, whales, whale hunting in Iceland etc.. It was disappointing!
But its natural, and hence no cribbing!

“ Great Experience ”
We did the 17:00 whale watching tour two days ago and we had a great time. We saw several mink whales, a humpback whale and a group of dolphins. The mink whales were a little far away but the humpback was not too far away from the boat and came up several times. Also the group of dolphins stayed at the boat for at least 5 minutes. Of course you will see wild animals so it is not predictable how close they come or if you see them at all. The crew was very polite and told us a lot about whales and their environment.

It was nice to be out on the sea but there were only a couple of Minke whales....I would recommend Elding - great commentary! You definitely need the space suits!

“ Lots of dolphins and whales and a double rainbow ”
Weather was perfect to start with. The guide was lively and made sure we are ok. Saw a rainbow shortly after we depart and it became a double rainbow soon after. First saw some dolphins from faraway but the boat manage to get closer and saw many more at closer distance. Then we spotted some minke whales and have been constantly tracking them. Manage to get close to around 200m which is very good. The day was perfect as there were at least 6-7 minke that we encountered. On the way back we saw many more dolphins and they swam right next to the boat. was a perfect day.

We enjoyed very much watching whales and dolphins but the think we liked the most was the environmental speech the guide Gave, alerting for whaling activities, oceans polution and more. Thank you for trying to make the world a cleaner place.

“ fantastic experience ”
We booked a classic whale watching trip at 2pm on 22nd July with Lucas as our guide
The weather was a little chilly and wet so I made the most of the warm overalls.
On the trip we were lucky enough to see Humpback whale, minke whale & harbour porpoises and white beaked dolphins.
Lucas was very informative (and funny) throughout the trip and everyone got a good look at the animals that were spotted.
The boat was very comfortable with everything on board that you could possibly need

“ A good adventure ”
The crew and guides were friendly, informed, professional and passionate about their subject matter; whale watching. You will feel safe and in capable hands. A great family friendly atmosphere on board the 3 hour adventure that caters to all.
To manage expectations, I must say that these guys are not miracle workers when it comes to weather, sea conditions and they certainly don’t have remote controls that summons where and when the whales choose to show up, if at all. However, from my experience I can say they will give it a 100% effort to make sure you get decent sightings of the amazing creatures out there in the bay.
On our first outing on the Friday 22nd June we are so absolutely nothing. The sea was also rough and few of us were feeling really green. However, the staff did make it very clear before we all boarded that the seas were rough and even asked families with young kids to reconsider on a different day to come out on the tour. I thought that was a really honest and reassuring thing for them to do. As it happens, none of the 2 or 3 families with young children took up the offer to postpone their outing to another time. As it happens, this trip turned out to be a `wave watching’ rather than ‘whale watching’ tour as none of them seemed in the mood to be seen on that day!
Fortunately, these guys offer complimentary tickets to passengers on a trip with no sightings. The tickets can be used within 3 years of the issue date apparently. TIP: try to avoid booking a whale watching trip on the last day of your visit. So that in the event of a no sightings trip, you still have the opportunity to try again the following day on a complimentary ticket.
This is precisely what we did. We returned the next day, same time and boarded for another 3 hour trip into the bay. It was well worth it with some sightings including a hump back whale doing one of those postcard flips out of the water to everyone’s delight!
In summary, I highly recommend this company as you will be in very good hands. But manage your expectations, don’t expect miracles but certainly be ready for an adventure.

“ They delivered more than we expected ”
We booked late for a whale waching tour. The boat was easy to find, had great speakers and good english skills, so everybody could hear the guide clearly (which is pretty important on a tour like this). The boat even had a small bar for snacks. And of cause pullovers for the cold and life jackets.
We saw different whales, dolphins. puffins ect. Way more than we expected. These guys sure know to find what they are looking for.
Even our 4 year old son had a great time.

“ Outstanding trip! ”
We spent the afternoon with Edling, excellent guides and staff. We saw minke whales, white beaked dolphins, puffins, gannets and other birds. The highlight of the trip was seeing a Northern Right Whale, which is functionally endangered. Only about 500 left in the world. While on the boat, the biologists on board got confirmation. What an amazing day! The guide shared the excitement of all staff and passengers. This review was mistakenly posted on Special Tours. Edling is the correct company.

“ Memory for a lifetime ”
One of the best and most memorable experiences of my life! There are no guarantees on a whale watching tour, and despite booking for a time of year when we were more likely to see whales, we knew there was a possibility we wouldn't see any.
But we weren't disappointed - the image of the humpback whale will stay with me forever! I rate this particular tour highly because the guides did a great job of getting everyone involved, were entertaining and informative. For me personally, it turns out I get sea-sick, and the staff were so helpful (and prepared!), that this did not ruin the trip at all.
If you want to book a whale watching trip in Reykjavik, I do recommend this one.

“ Fantastic trip ”
We took the Elding Whale Watching tour and we enjoyed it very much. It was a nice day, the sea was flat, and we were lucky enough to see several white dolfins, some minke whales and lots of birds. It was a great show. Not many different whale types, but it was exciting to see some of these big mammals. Tour was done in a very professional way, with lots of information and the precise location of what animals to see.

“ Horrible Experience!!! ”
Our last night in Iceland was wasted on 3 hours of everyone sea sick and throwing up all over the boat in extremely rough waters and freezing cold weather. Our expensive camera was also broken by the waves coming into the boat. Elding Whale Tour should not have taken us out on the boat in such poor weather conditions. It was one of the worst experiences we have ever had.

“ Humpback whale, dolphins, and puffin sighting!! ”
Had a great experience!!! Got to see one, maybe two, humpbacks (not sure if it was the same one on two different occasions). Everyone, including the tour guides, were excited. The guide mentioned that they had been getting worried because they hadn't had a humpback whale sighting in over a week, but were seeing other types of whales. Also saw a school/pod of dolphins, who were very active. A couple even jumped out of the water, with one jumping out backwards!! The tour was about 3 hrs. Our guide was Luca (looks a bit like Zlatan Ibrahimovic). He was great! He did a great job of explaining things, was attentive, and funny. Gave us tips on how to avoid see sickness for those that maybe prone to it. They do have tablets for that if you need it. I did have to explain to him where Maryland is since he had never heard of that state haha. He always explained what we were seeing, pointed out sightings right away, taught marine facts, and preservation. You can tell that he, and the rest of crew, care about these animals. I highly recommend this tour with Elding! If you are lucky enough to get Luca, you won't regret it.

“ Excellent tour ”
Obviously to some extent, whale watching tours depend on whether you get lucky and see whales. But we did, and it was marvellous.
We chose a day in early June when the sea was fairly calm (I don't think you ever get flat seas in Iceland) and went out on a morning tour with our 5yo.
We saw white-beaked dolphins, about 10 minke whales and 2 humpbacks who were showing off in the water. You can see a few photos - these were taken with a mobile phone.
The tour is about the right length. The 5yo found it a bit long. It's cold on the water and they didn't have any suits that were small enough to be 5yo sized. However he did love seeing the whales and enjoyed the adventure - talking about it a lot after. The ship was comfortable and well equipped and at this time of year there was plenty of space (about 40 on the boat).
The tour guide, Rodrigo, was brilliant at keeping a narrative going for 3 hours. He was interesting and informative. He had high energy and helped us make lots of sightings.
Overall we really enjoyed the trip.

“ Two tours - Whale watching and puffin watching ”
We did two different tours with Elding - Puffin watching and whale watching. Both tours were with our five year old which I'm mentioning because it impacts my recommendation for the whale watching tour.
Overall, I will say that if you choose to do either tour, Elding is a great company to go with. Their boats were well maintained and safe. They were easy to find and extremely responsive via email. The tours were good value and they provided all the equipment you would need. Both tours were the "classic" tours (on a larger boat) since my son was too young for the smaller boat tours.
First, we did the puffin tour in the am. It was a great tour and the perfect amount of time (about 1.5 hours). You don't go too close to the puffins since it's nesting season and they don't want to disturb the birds but we did see a lot of puffins. My son was a little underwhelmed because I think he was expecting see them up close but he still enjoyed the tour. Our guide was informative and answered all of our questions. The boat had an indoor area below and an open deck.
The second tour was the whale watching tour. I have mixed feelings about this tour. Obviously they have no control over the wildlife but just be aware that the whales typically seen on this tour seem to be a bit harder to spot and aren't as "showy" as some other whales. We did see one humpback on our tour but it just briefly surfaced. There were numerous whale and dolphin sightings and all of the adults in our group really enjoyed the tour. The problem was with our five year old. He was a little small to see over the edge of the boat and never caught a glimpse of a whale. They would surface so quickly that by the time he would look, they were gone. We found a spot on the side of the boat that had a railing instead of a solid ledge so he could see but every time a whale was spotted, they turned the boat so it would usually resurface right in the front. I thought I may be able to lift him up a bit but it was impossible in the (extremely helpful!) jumpsuits they provided. He never caught a glimpse of a whale which made it a very disappointing, LONG 4 hour tour. The other issue (and obviously also not their fault) was that we had rough seas. Many people on board were sick. We didn't get sick but we all took the sea sick medication they provided and spent the last hour sleeping because of the drowsiness :)
So, I'd absolutely recommend Elding if you want to see whales and puffins. I'd just consider skipping it if you have young children. And if you do the whale watching tour, arrive early and get a spot at the very front of the boat.

A birthday surprise from my partner and it didn’t disappoint. We saw some minke whales, white beaked dolphins and some puffins. They provide thermal overalls to keep you warm and sea sickness tablets. There is also a bar on board. This was one of the most affordable whale watching tours and it delivers what it advertises. If you’re in Reykjavik i highly recommended it.

“ Perfect day, for both a novice and experienced traveler. ”
On Thursday, May 31st, at 1pm, I took my sister on her first whale watching adventure with Elding out of Reykjavik. This was my 5th expedition, though first in Iceland, but my sister’s first. Elding far surpassed all of my experiences and gave her the memory of a lifetime.. From the welcoming, knowledgeable staff, to the exemplary equipment offered and comfortable ship, it was wonderful. I cannot think of a single thing to improve upon.
Our trip narrator and spotter was extraordinary. For three hours she never missed a spotting, taught us extensive marine facts, preservation, ecological and folkloric information, and made us laugh. I’ve done public speaking and know the difficulties. I was impressed that she kept us enthralled for 3 hours.
I know it is happenstance as to how many sightings will occur, that these are wild creatures. We were so fortunate to have multiple whale sightings of several varieties, and a very large pod of dolphins. Also, Puffins, Gannets and several species I’m unfamiliar with. It was truly perfect.
Please thank your staff for the priceless experience and education they gave us.

“ Some whales around, lots of see sickness ”
So on saturday the 2nd of june at 1pm, we went for the second time on this trip with Elding to see the whales since on the 1st time we had no luck.
This time the weather was a bit better, but the sea was quite rough, so half an hour after we left the harbour there was sea sick people already, plus, comparing to a lot of previous experiences in boats, the captain was either unexperient or was just enjoying having people trowing up all over the place, since one of the first rules if you're comanding a boat is that you face the waves turning the boat on their direction, mostly if you're stoped, you never, ever, NEVER put the boat on the side, getting the waves on the sides of the boat, beside the fact of everyone getting sea sick with that, it is SUPER dangerous, since you can turn the boat... All the other boats were actually doing it right, our boat was the only one that was taking the waves on the side while it was stopped.
I know Elding never had problems before, but if this keeps happening, I don't know how long is it gonna take until they run out of luck.
Besides this issue that ruined the whole trip for everyone, we got to see some minky whales and sea birds. The Elding staff that was talking on the mic spotted a humpback whale, minkies, puffins, and a few other species.
I would advise people to do it during the summer, and try to pick a quiet day to do it, or just go to the southern islands where you can spot them from land avoiding to pay 10.000 isk :)

“ Adrenaline rush with whales!!! ”
We took a high speed jet boat whale watching tour with Elding and it was amazing. Firstly, you start off flying across the ocean on an adrenaline rush generating high speed jet boat. This thing really flew! Just the boat ride alone was fun, but we also saw lots of humpback and minky whales. Aquatic birds were everywhere and we also saw a huge flock of puffins. 10/10 would go on a tour again. They had warm suits for us to wear, but our feet, hands and ears were freezing by the end of the ride. Wear warm socks!! The small boat allowed us to quickly and easily maneuver closer to the whales as they were spotted.
This tour is best for:
1) people who like wild rides.
2) people who like nature and whales.
This tour would not be good for:
1) people who easily get motion sickness
2) young children. You really have to hold on during the ride! I wouldn’t bring my son until he was maybe 10. They may have age limits too, not sure.

“ Rather disappointing ”
I have to admit that the entire experience was quite disappointing. First of all, the departure point changed, and instead from Reykjavik we departed from a harbour an hour away from the capital. So 3h trip turned into almost 6h one. We kinda spotted one type of a whale but it was too far away to actually see it properly. Then the same whale was moving around so the tour operator was shouting all the time 'its now on the left' then 'look right' and people were running across the boat to basically see nothing. Elderly people didn't even bother to go out as it was too cold.
On top of this, the tour operator said that all whales in Iceland are killed before of tourists... well ok... But they organise an activity for tourists and tell them they are the cause why whales are killed... Weird and appropriate.
We wanted to take a puffin watching your with this company the next day but we gave up.

they provided anti-nausea pills...they alerted us to the fact that there was swell...we went on our 'whale tour' anyway. anyone who has ever fished knows that they call it fishing, and not catching, for a reason. despite my wife chumming the waters like 3 times, no whales materialized on our 3 hour tour. clearly not the crews fault, and they were exceptional! they looked after her, and my son that (according to the crew member that came and found me)'like 15 stairs...but he popped back up! I think the American word you use is resilient.' the ride in was smooth enough that I could enjoy a couple beers...my wife: not so much.

“ Amazing chance to see some whales ”
We booked this trip in Iceland from the tourist info as we wanted to wait and see what the weather was like. The guy in the tourist info office was really helpful in helping us choose which trip we should take and we decided on this for the mix of whales and sea birds we hoped to see.
The boat left the harbour promptly at 1pm and we headed out for about 45 minutes into the bay before we saw anything (puffins). About another 15 minutes though we came across a school of about 7 dolphins, we got really close and that was really something to see.
After watching them for 20 minutes or so we headed out a bit more and had a blink or you'll miss it encounter with a minke whale. We were lucky to be standing just where it surfaced so not everybody on the boat got the chance. We were nearly heading back when our guide thought he spotted spray from a blow hole ahead, next to another couple of boats. We proceeded onwards and sure enough, it was a hump back whale! It surfaced and dived about 10 times as it fed, truly remarkable. On the way back we even saw some harbour porpoises to complete the journey and another Minke whale appeared.
We were out for about 4 hours, which was ideal. On the way back we spent most of the time inside as the rain came on and we could enjoy refreshments. The guide was great, telling us exactly what to look out for. You could even wear a warm suit that they provide free if you wanted.
I would recommend waiting for good weather, as bad weather would make the animals really hard to see and also you might become ill. They do offer the chance to go on another trip to use within 2 years if you don't see anything though.
The only negative from the day was a rival companies boat, The Andrea. She left at the same time as us and for some reason we always managed to find good spots to see animals and they didn't. What this meant was that she charged after us whenever we found something and their captain did not seem to respect the animals as much as ours did. We kept a respectful distance (although we got more than close enough) but The Andrea kept coming in too fast and close, thus scaring the animals away. I would avoid that tour, and hopefully something is done to keep the Andrea under control in the future.

“ No Wales just sickness ”
Can’t help but feel cheated. A family of 5 booked the trip in the office on the morning and were charged 61,000 isk (£436) even though we could have booked as advertised on here for £360 and that’s with no discount for a child.
We then spent 3 hours on the boat over very rough seas with 3 of us as well as at least half the rest of the boat being sick over the side or into paper bags.
We then didn’t see anything other than birds and returned to the harbour feeling so bad we went straight back to our hotel and needed a couple hours before we felt up to going out again. When you are only in Iceland for 3 days and you waste one of them and a lot of money on this you do feel as though you have been cheated. Just be aware before booking of the cost, sickness and impact to the rest of your day.

“ Boat trip, not whalewatching ”
We went this week on a tour with this company. We were really dissapointed. We bought the tickets in the ticket office in Akureyri where we were told that the tour takes about 3 hours. Nobody mentioned that half an hour will be on the bus. After the tour we went to the office for some explanation where we were told that it is like this to get closer to the area where we can see the whales. I would accept this explanation if we have had seen whales. What we saw in these 3 hours is 3-5 times the tail of a whale for like 2 seconds. I understand that whales cannot be influenced and I wouldn't ask that. But asking this amount of money for the service what we have received is not reasonable at all.
It is a nice fjord, but actually I wanted to see whales, not to go on a boat trip.
When I raised my concerns about the trip, I received a reply saying that wildlife is unpredictable. (If I would go on an open air concert and because of a storm it gets cancelled, so I don't see anything I would get back my money. I think weather is as predictable as wildlife... but apparently here they see the things differently.)

“ Excellent trip, plenty to see ”
Received an email cancelling our trip due to weather, however an alternative was trip was offered at the same time.
Collected or tickets from the office, the speed and service was great.
Boarding the vessel the meet and greet was brilliant and sea outdoor clothing was offered immediately.
The ship was spotless and large enough with plenty of space to view anything of interest.
The young Polish lady who provided the observations and running commentary was superb and kept going the whole trip in cold overcast conditions. We saw humpbacks and Minki whales along with dolphins and porpoises.
The captain kept us out longer than was expected and this was approximately 30 minutes longer than a vessel run by another company.
At the end of the trip heading into port the young Polish lady came over to my wife and me chatting about herself the trip and our stamina for staying outside the whole trip. A really friendly member of staff who obviously loves her job.
At the same time a male member of staff stood nearby spent over 30 minutes talking to a female passenger about anything and everything.
The trip made a fantastic ending to our months holiday in Canada and eventually Iceland.
Elding you really did make our holiday finish on a HIGH,(seas).

Disappointed that there was not even a fish of any description to be seen! The tour guide was very informative and clearly knew her stuff. There were a lot of seabirds congregating in the bay but nothing else. We have been given complimentary tickets for another tour valid for two years and we will be back but the moral of the tale is not to go in the winter as the chances of seeing anything is lessened!

“ Okay tour - but no whales :( ”
The tour was okay. The overalls and sea sickness tablets you’re offered are a big plus.
The company also seems very ethical, and had a big focus on recycling and protecting/researching the whales. However, when you were outside, or even inside, you could smell the fuel from the boat quire often - which can’t be good for the ocean!
The tour lasts about three hours - one hour out to the ‘hot spot’, one searching for whales and another coming back. The tour guide was okay and had some fairly interesting facts, but from what I heard I didn’t learn too much. However, I did miss quite a bit of what she was saying because of the bad quality speakers that were used.
Unfortunately we didn’t see any whales on our trip, which I gather is common in winter. We did however see dolphins which are amazing to look at, but they were hunting so we only caught a glimpse of a dorsal fin every few minutes - don’t be expecting big displays or jumps out of the water.
Even more disappointingly, we were mislead by their advertisement which said you can get a free ticket for another trip if you don’t see anything. As this was a whale watching tour, we thought this meant if you don’t see any whales you get another ticket. However as we seen a dolphin we weren’t offered another ticket.
Overall this tour DEFINITELY wasn’t worth £170+ in winter, it’s too much of a gamble, but I would be happy to try again in summer when there are more whales in the bay. I would also recommend looking into using a smaller tour, as this one was crowded, took a long time getting out to the water and wasn’t very personal.

“ Didn't see any whales - even in whale season ”
We visited Iceland for 2 nights in April 2017 - whale season. I cannot fault their punctuality but the tour lasted 3 hours - an hour getting to the 'hot spot' for whales and hour trying to find them and an hour getting back to harbour. We didn't see any whales and i know that's not the tour operator's fault but still frustrating because we were there for 3 days and could have done more with that time that sit on a freezing cold boat. They did give us free tickets to return whenever we liked but we were going home the next day so we couldn't. This tour would have been amazing if we would have seen something but my advice is if you're visiting iceland for a short break i would prioritise other tours over this one and only if you have the time do the whale watching tour otherwise it would be a waste of time.

“ Elding whale watching - loved the wildlife guide commentary ”
Did the Elding whale watching yesterday in freezing temperatures, greatly helped by all-enveloping overalls provided plus Mike’s commentary on the wildlife from the guide box. Helped keep you focused on why you’re there and constantly pointing out activity and explaining the background. No whale sightings but I love dolphins and we saw loads frolicking around - fabulous. Mike also talked about human impact on the animals’ environment and how we can change behaviour to help. Good for him at a time where it’s not always being talked about helpfully in the public sphere. Great trip - thank you.

“ Eaten by a boiler suit! ”
Such a beautiful trip out to see the whales. We were very glad of the big old 'trawlerman' suits that were provided as they kept us snuggly and warm on a snowy day. We were very lucky to see two humpback whales and some dolphins. The crew were knowledgeable and helpful, and there was plenty of room for people to rush from one side of the boat to the other to see the creatures as they moved. A never to be forgotten trip.

“ Whale-Watching Tour from Reykjavik ”
On a grey day, decided to go whale-watching. Chose Elding because they have a diary of sightings online which tells you what has been seen the morning or days before. Good knowledgeable person giving commentary and telling us where to look and the science behind the cetaceans. We saw whales in the distance, but didn't manage to catch up with them - but we did see four separate pods of white-nosed dolphins up close. Trip was between 2½ and 3½ hours in duration, they supplied wet-weather gear plus sea-sickness tablets if required. Worth taking some binoculars if you have them.

“ Whale Watching ”
My wife and I did the whale watching tour last week. The waves were extremely rough, despite it being a very sunny day! Do bundle up - I had several layers on even though it did not feel as cold in the city of Reykjavik. Even with my several layers, we opted to wear their overalls, which helped a lot to keep us warm and dry.
We managed to see 2 minke whales and a humpback that breached the water. It was an exciting moment. Because of the rough seas, I think half of the boat got seasick, even though everyone was given pills before we boarded - luckily they provide bags for everyone. The whole trip took about 3 hours and I noticed that this boat went out a little further into the sea than the other boat tours. Overall, we had a great time, glad we got to see the whales, I've been reading the trip reports for the days prior to our trip and it seemed it was a hit or miss. I would probably recommend going in the summer time though.

“ Great trip ”
We were very lucky to do the trip as it had either to be cancelled the days before due to bad weather or there were no whales at all. But we got to see about a dozen sightings, some right beside the boat, there were quite a few Minke Whales around and the guides were very good at spotting them, many thanks !

“ Amazing company! ”
We went on the tour in November the day after a massive wind storm. We knew our chances of seeing something weren't the best but we still wanted the experience. The seas were rough and we were warned before hand and given anti nausea tablets. We were able to see a group of white beaked dolphins about 10-20 meters away from the boat but we were still offered complimentary tickets as not everyone was able to see them. The best part about the free tickets is that they are valid for two years just incase you cant make it back on the current trip. They also are valid on the tour in Northern Iceland.

“ Very interesting, but you need some luck ”
A couple of hours cruise at the Northern Sea, which is exciting enough in itself - but remember it might be shaky, and it is cold. Personally, we weren't bothered since we don't get sea sick, and we dressed very warmly. But if you need, you can get pills against sea sickness for free, also suites against the cold.
Our guide was a very nice Englishwoman (so her English was excellent), a doctor of marine biology who gave great explanations about the animals and sea life. The explanation was heard loud and clear on the ship, even though we were outside in the wind.
As with any wildlife tour, you'll need luck and patience - no one promises dancing whales and dolphins waving hello... We did see several dolphins swimming, a group of porpoises, and a whale or two for a few seconds, which is no little.

“ Two Great Trips, informative tour guides but no whales! Complimentary tickets for 3rd Trip ”
Our first trip with Elding was on Friday 27th October, we were picked up at our accommodation and brought to the ticket office at Reykjavik Harbour. We produced our tickets and we were offered seasick tablets, these were definitely needed! The wind direction meant we had to sail from Keflavik so we had an hour long bus trip there. We boarded our boat and we were advised to put on the waterproof onsies which are stored in the lounge area of the boat. I would recommend that you wear these as not only are they waterproof, they also protect from the biting wind whilst as sea, they also act as a flotation device. The weather was quite stormy so we were warned that it would be a choppy ride which was fine for me but not so for some of my travelling companions one of whom was quite ill! Our tour guide was enthusiastic and informative pointing out the various types of birds we encountered along with giving information about the whales, dolphins and porpoises that live in the bay. It really was a white knuckle ride at one stage which was so much fun but unfortunately we didn't encounter any whales! Elding's policy is that if the whales don't show then they offer complimentary tickets which are valid for two years from the issue date so if you're at the end of your holiday you can always just rebook to go back! We were dropped off back at our accommodation in Reykjavik.
Our second trip was on Sunday 29th October on a much calmer sea, again we were picked up at our accommodation. This time we were on a much bigger boat and we sailed from Reykjavik Harbour, it was a busier trip. The tour guide was again quite informative but it was quite difficult to hear him at times. The trip was quite pleasant, you do need to have a bit of patience! A minke whale was seen by a few people on the boat and also a couple of dolphins. The tour guide however was very disappointed and felt that everyone on board didn't really experience a proper whale watching experience so complimentary tickets were offered again. I'm hoping to return to avail of this offer! Once again we were dropped off back at our accommodation
All the staff at Elding were very friendly and accommodating and I would definitely recommend booking a trip with them. They also offer Northern Lights by boat, a friend of mine took this trip and said it was amazing.

“ Whale watching is seasonal ”
Great experience overall. Unfortunately whale watching I discover while on this tour is seasonal. By the end of October the big whales like hump back are no longer in the area and have moved to warmer waters so we just saw white tip dolphins and smaller minke whales.
Elsing used one the bigger ships in harbor for whale watching which is good. Staff is very helpful and had great knowledge of the whales and dolphins.

“ It's always difficult deciding how to rate a trip like this. ”
Elding obviously can't help the weather, and that was the main factor in the success of our trip. We were in Reykjavik in August and the weather wasn't kind. The previous day we had been keeping an eye on the website to see whether it was going ahead, as some trips had been cancelled that day. Ours (which was the first one of the day) was confirmed, but the departure point was moved. As a result we started with a coach trip. This didn't seem to impact the time we had looking for Whales.
The guide did a good job of sounding enthusiastic, but the rough seas meant that it would have been difficult to spot any sealife even if it was there.
I believe that the later tours were all cancelled, and perhaps this one should have been as well. That's a judgement call though, and there was a big group booked, so maybe that had an impact on the decision. I won't criticise Elding for their decision, and we enjoyed the ride anyway.
The ship was comfortable, and the facilities good. Had the weather been better then I'm sure it would have been a very nice trip.

“ Whale Watching Tour ”
This is a thoroughly enjoyable tour to embark on and hopefully I will be back one day to experience this again. However I must start the review setting expectations for people who have yet been on this tour. Even though it says Whale watching, you are not guaranteed to see any whales. The animals you are hopefully going to see are truly wild animals and are not the trained performing beasts you see in an aquarium. That said, don't let it put you off going on the trip. You'll get a guide who will talk to you about the animals you are hopefully going to see and you'll get the opportunity to see the Icelandic coast line. If you are on the open air deck, you'll also get the option to borrow warmer clothes to combat the chilly winds and any inclement weather you may encounter. They even offer sea sickness pills for those who may suffer from it. The inside sections of the boat include a bar so you can enjoy a variety of drinks while on board. It all adds up to a pleasant cruise around the bay even if you don't see whales. For our trip, we got lucky with the animals. We had a couple of sightings of a humpback whale, a minke whale and a couple of white beaked dolphins. These sightings were the icing on the cake, but even without seeing them, it was still a delightful trip around the bay. Hopefully we will be back.

We went whale watching with an open view that we might not see one but we were so excited when we did. We saw a mink whale. It came close to the boat and we saw it a few times. There was also lots of porpoises.
Our guide (sabrina) was very knowledgeable and was great and spotting the whale and telling is interesting facts.

“ Great experience ”
Although we only got to see one breaching Minke Whale (which was incredible) at the end of our tour we had an amazing time! It was nice to go out on a boat to see a different angle of Reykjavik and also exciting being on top deck bouncing over the waves. Our guide was a marine biologist from England and she was very informative when we saw the birds and whales and was happy to answer any questions we had. It was a shame we didn't see many whales, although sightings cannot be guaranteed as they are wild and free animals but the tour could be improved by even if no whales are seen, the guide would talk about the different kinds of whale that are around Iceland so at least you can learn about the different whales and marine life in Iceland instead of just sitting there waiting for a whale to appear before the guide talks about it but thats just my opinon of how to make it even better. All in all loved it though and can't wait to visit again it really was a fantastic way to spend the morning!

“ Gannet watching ”
The tour was called whale watching but although our guide did spot one minke whale a lot onboard did not get a sighting as the whale was gone before we could react. Did see a lot of gannets diving for food but little else, just was not our lucky day, but no fault of company as whales are wild unpredictable mammals, otherwise could not fault experience or commentary made which was very enlightening.

A lifetime dream to see these beautiful creatures in their natural environment with a company renowned for its eco conscious approach to whale watching. “ A bit of a gamble about which animals you'll see but all good fun! ”
We had a fabulous time. The boat is large and easily accommodated the large number of passengers. All set up with large macs to wear as everyone really does get very wet! The guy over the PA system had a challenging job to keep us all informed about what was arising from the water and it can very much be a case of blink and you'll miss it! I think the people on the other side of the boat saw more but we saw some Minke Wales and plenty of pelicans on Pelican Island. Nice to have the option of standing inside or outside, out from the cold, bracing wind. Good customer service.

“ Cool Experience ”
We were lucky to see a few Minke Whales and lots of dolphins. The guide was great, I especially liked the information provided on the way back to the harbor, about the whaling industry and the environment. The 3 hour tour was long enough, I was frozen by the time it ended. The "whale punch" was a nice treat to warm us up and there were blankets and coats available as well. Very glad we took the time to do this as I had never gone whale watching before and who knows if I'll ever be that close the whales and dolphins again.

The staff is very helpful and our guide Sabrina was brilliant! She helped a lot to point out where were the whales and we got to see some eventually. I have to say that 3 hours was too long and I end up very tired, but I had a lovely time. Good price, good service. The weather was beautiful sun shining, kinda chilly inland but freezing at the sea, luckily they offer blankets and thermo overalls. There are washing room facilities and a small café in the boat. Very informative and fun.

“ Awesome trip ”
We were gutted to be told that the sea was too rough to go out on the Saturday we had booked as we only had a weekend minibreak to pack in the sights. We took a chance and booked on the Sunday 5pm trip as we could just about do the Golden circle if we left earlier on the Sunday.
We were kept in suspense all day as tour after tour was cancelled but the 5pm was listed as possible. It was hard to get any further info as the number on our brochure just rang out.
Our hotel checked for us when we got back at 4.30 and said it was running but it would be rough,
Hmmm I'm not an experienced sailor at all but I've never experienced seasickness and I was so desperate to do the trip that we went ahead and got on board. I'd deliberately not eaten all day as I was really concerned that puking would spoil the trip.
We took the anti- emetic before we went on. We were offered waterproof overalls but although it was chilly I was ok in a hoodie and jeans for the whole trip. There weren't that many people on board and I'd been advised that you should get head to the front outside and not go indoors if you could help it. We got a spot on the upper deck right by the guide - there was lots of space and I didn't move from that spot until we were heading back to harbour.
Our guide was from the Seychelles and was really knowledgeable. The sea was choppy as we got out of the bay and it started to drizzle. It was too rough to try and take pics etc as you needed to hold on with both hands.
We saw lots of birdlife and then had a viewing of a Minke Whale. Its like any wildlife trip- you need patience and concentration.
There were people suffering to be honest and being sick on deck and on the overalls so I was glad I'd declined borrowing one although I regretted not having socks!
After about three hours we were lucky enough to have 30 mins in close proximity with a pod of 3 or 4 huge dolphins who came right close and played around the boat. With the engines turned off we chopped and pitched even more but it was worth it and I kept my stomach contents in.
There's a bar and café on board- I had a hot chocolate and rum when we got back into calmer waters.
Recommendations- I suspect the trips get cancelled quite a lot so if this is a highlight for you try and get it in early on or leave time to rebook. Ask the guides questions- ours was so passionate about her subject and seemed happy to chat away to us. She said she new we were from the North of England as we were the only people not in coats!
Take the anti-emetic thirty mins before and maybe go easy on food. Don't expect great photos either and have an open mind. They reckon on a 90% viewing rate so you've a good chance.

“ Nice people, well-managed, few whales that day ”
The boat was as expected and the whale-watching that day was minimal at best, but that was certainly not the fault of Elding. We had a nice time, and for a mid-size boat offering drinks and snacks and full protective gear they did a great job. Very friendly and priced according to what everybody else charges (everything is expensive!).

“ Whale wayching ”
We were unlucky on our first trip but took advantage of the complimentary ticket to have another look for whales and dolphins, and it paid off!
We saw a minke whale within about 20minutes and continued to see white-beaked dolphins (about 6 pods) and minke whales (about 6 different sightings) throughout the whole trip. The Dolphins and whales swam close to boat and we had great views of them - wow!!
The staff on the boat were informative and wonderful at pointing out sightings so that everyone had the best chance of seeing the animals.
We were provided with warm overalls and there was a bar and music onboard, a perfect trip that we'd highly recommend.

“ Nice experience, but dolphins > whales ”
We have only seen one whale on our tour and very very shyly - it just popped out of the water 2 times and we weren't even that close to it. But I won't blame Elding for that, it's not their fault and there is no way to control nature.
First of all, I recommend you to schedule this tour at the beginning of your stay in Reykjavik, since it may get delayed because of the bad weather conditions. It happened to us 2 times and instead of doing it in our first day in Reykjavik, we did it on our last (so 4 days later). Once again, not Elding's fault, but it's best to be assured (although you'll be refunded if it is rescheduled and you can't attend) if you really want to go on a whale watching tour.
As for the tour itself, it was nice actually. Elding offers great facilities, even though the wi-fi connection didn't work for almost the whole trip. Be prepared for the very powerful and cold wind even if you go there in the summer and there is no wind in Reykjavik! Also, stay strong on your feet because people will crowd like crazy when seeing a whale or a dolphin.
Our tour guide was great and very informative and we have seen many dolphins playing around our boat and teasing us, which was great fun. But after that we went on and tried to chase a whale, but, as I said, we didn't get to see that much. The tour might have been better if more focused on dolphins: they are way more fun!
Save 3 hours or so for this and, once again, dress up well!

“ Excellent whale watching trip ”
We were lucky to take a trip on a calm, good weather sort of day. Lots of minke whales, some harbour porpoises and many leaping dolphins made appearances. We also saw many, many puffins. Our group included children (8 and 6) and they really enjoyed themselves. Under 7s go free and there were warm overalls that fitted both (just about). The staff were friendly, helpful and informative. I highly recommend this company.

“ Saw Whales and Dolphins ”
Chose this whale excursion over others due to Trip Advisor. Pretty nice, overall. Need to dress warm no matter the temp or sun when leaving. I had hat, gloves, wool coat, sweatshirt, jeans, boots and shirt on...still a little nippy even though August and land temp was 55. It seemed full capacity but we were still able to have a stand on the rails (bow of the boat fills up and people don't move even though it would be nice if after they've seen the fish to allow others to get a view/picture). Our speaker was okay...but she sometimes forgot to say where the fish were (3 o'clock, etc) so that caused some missed opportunities. Why only 4 stars? We spent way too much time chasing dolphins instead of heading further out to find whales like we saw other boats do. We did see a Minke whale, which looks like a large dolphin: no exciting tail slaps on the water. We saw Minkes in Nova Scotia last summer so was hoping for another kind. Oh well. Overall, informative, not too crowded, and worth it.

“ Professional service and lots of whales! ”
The Elding offered a very professional service from beginning to end.
We pre-booked tickets online with pickup and everything went smoothly and according to plan. On the ship everyone was offered warm overalls and children were required to wear life jackets. Safety was a primary concern which was assuring.
We were lucky with excellent conditions on a calm sea and were able to spot many minke whales and dolphins! Many more sightings than we had expected.
We were very satisfied and would recommend anyone travelling to Reykjavik to go on this trip!

“ Didn't see much but they made up for it ”
Went out on a cloudless warm (on land) day at 1pm on a Thursday. Sea was a bit choppy. We had lots of layers on so didn't need the free suits they offer. Trip lasted 3 hours and 45 minutes because there wasn't much activity out there. We saw 3 Minke whales, although Rodrigo, the very good guide, missed the first one as we left the harbour (we thought it was a dolphin until we actually saw the Minkes later). No dolphins, porpoises or humpbacks. They offered us free tickets for another trip in the next 2 years which was very generous as they normally only do that if you see nothing. It really is hit and miss but if you like a long boat trip, birdwatching (puffins, gannets, fulmar) beautiful scenery and a knowledgeable guide, then definitely worth a go.

“ If you are lucky... ”
Well, I have been on these tours trice in Iceland, once in New Zealand, few times in Greenland and once in California. They are all the same: most of the time you end up seeing few sprouts and tails in distance. Much of it depends on weather - I would not go anymore if there is much swell, not to talk about actual wind. the boats cannot approach the whales safely in those conditions, and one ends up seeing spots in the horizon - if you are lucky. While the organisation of this latest trips was ok, it is basically activity with very industrial feeling: words of land crabs packed on a boat and shuffled to watch whale tale silhouettes in the horizon. Exciting? Perhaps once, but not after the first 15 min. If your kids have weak stomach, you might be better off showing them pictures of whales in bed..

“ Stay on the left side of the boat ”
Fun thing to do when visiting Iceland, but if you are expecting to see a big whale tail or a large part of a whale you will be disappointed. Minke whales don't come up to the service and "showcase" like a jump back whale does. We saw quite a few minke whales, just the very top of their back.... and they were always on the left side of the boat. If you can stand the wind stand at the front of the boat on the main level or top level- best view. Use the coveralls they offer- they protect you from wind, cold and getting wet. We did see quite a few dolphins which played around the boat and gave quite a show. Other than that the Minke whales were ok, but couldn't really tell you what they looked like based on how little of the whale we saw. Staff was really nice and always excited when they saw a whale and were telling you where to look. Complimentary Dramamine if you need it. We all took it before but it was rather calm and would have been fine without it. Just didn't want to take any chances.

“ Not worth the money or hassle ”
I know that whale watching is totally subjective to the behavior of the whale of course, but this excursion was quite disappointing and not worth the cost by a long shot. We did spot a few whales but all we saw was the back a few times and there was zero interaction. I would have rather spent that money seeing whales at a local aquarium. Also I thought the tour would be much more informative, with at least some interesting highlights about the area, but all the guide focused on was getting us to concentrate on endlessly watching the water to get that split second few of a whales back. The overalls provided seemed to be of good quality, though I didn't need them.

We were blessed with a calm, sunny day and saw both white nosed dolphins and a minke whale (briefly). We stayed on the top deck for the entire trip and enjoyed the lovely views of Reykjavik and the surrounding mountains. Our guide was very well informed and relayed lots of information whilst scouring the sea with binoculars. The boat was very well equipped with loos, a small bar and optional overalls if you felt cold, We went out on a sunny day in August, on land it was 18C but overalls were still needed out at sea. Bring gloves and hats, don't spoil your trip by being cold!

“ Excellent Guide And Good View Of Marine Life ”
(There is no option for adult family). My mum and I went as part of a guided holiday and this was one of the highlights of the trip. The guide on the PA was just as excited as we were to see the dolphins and whales and it really added to the experience. The only gripe I have is that the boat let out a lot of diesel fumes which made me feel very sick toward the end of the trip, but apart from that it was an excellent experience.

“ Disappointing trip ”
Joined this Elding whale watching trip after booking from an excursion on a cruise ship.
I was surprised how big the ship was, obviously no close encounters from this ship.
We were the last group to board and all seats were taken. A lot of passengers were also kitted out in survival suits, but as no one spoke to our group about this, we were left in the dark about how to acquire one.
It was disappointing not to see a big whale and the minke whale which was spotted was on the opposite side of the boat. The white striped Dolphins were the only animals I saw. I realise that the whales are wild animals and sighting cannot be guaranteed, but was still disappointed.
I would not travel with this company again, although the lady spotter was very well informed, especially about the birds we saw.

“ Dolphin show off ”
We choose Elding since it had good opinion. We took off on the boat "Eldey" and decided to put on the warm overalls just for photography - but stayed in them the whole trip - since it's quite cold out there though the weather was sunny and windless. So I definitely recommend the warm overalls (I also recommend to have hat, scarf and gloves). Already in the harbour we had our first encounter with a young Humpback, when we got further we saw some dolphins and minke whales. The whales were a bit away so we only saw the backs of them but the dolphins decided to give us a show and swam near the boat so we got a close look.
Almost all the time we spend on the forecastle - which was great when the dolphins came. Unfortunately it was hard to hear what the guide was telling about there - so if you want to hear better you should stay up above the bridge. The guide told about the whales, dolphins and the birds we saw.
If you like being on the sea - it's a nice trip, if you're lucky you'll get close to the whales and dolphins but mostly you see them from a distance.

“ Awesome afternoon on the water ”
I booked an afternoon whale-watching trip on the spur of the moment and, unfortunately, saw no whales although there were many white-beaked dolphins and birds to make the experience worthwhile. “ Don't book in advance!! ”
This review has 3 stars mostly based on our experience with bad weather and NOT the company or service crew as they were truly fabulous. We had rain the entire time, very rough seas and only managed to see a few dolphins and 2 whales. The overalls help immensely with keeping shielded from the rain, wind and cold so make sure you wear one if you plan to be on the outside of the boat. My advise though is don't make the same mistake we did, DONT book in advance. Better wait for a day with good weather and then just go to their booth at the Harbor and book it right there same day. If you get stuck going on a sucky weather day because of a pre booked voucher you are in for a not so nice experience.

“ Great tour ”
This company is in a difficult position in relation to reviews. Your experience depends on what you see.
We travelled out on the 6th July 1pm tour, and decided before hand that if we did not see anything then it was a three hour boat ride and we would not get stressed if we saw nothing.
However we were lucky to see two types of dolphin, minkie and humpback whale and puffins.
I think negative reviews are unfair, this company should be judged on the boat, staff, facilites and not on the unpredictable nature. You have to go on the trip expecting to see nothing but happy when you do see something.
The boat was equipped with free warm sailing suits and the staff were great.there is a bar area which we did not use as we were up on deck the whole time.

“ Professional & fun ”
We booked the Classic Whale Watching trip from Reykjavik and were surprised with the number of sightings we had. We went on the 5pm tour at the beginning of July. The weather was ok and the sea was calm so this increases your chances. We saw many minke whales, a few humpback wales, harbour pupoises and dolphins and a number of birds, too. Most of the sightings were further away but it still gives you the feeling of seeing the animals in the wild. The organisation of the tour was brilliant. They are very good in telling you where to look to spot a whale, what to look out for and whether the whale may show up again soon. The guide was fun and very knowledgable and showed a lot of enthusiasm. Elding do respect the welfare of the whales, they try not harress the whales and also talk about hunting and whale meat in the restaurants. It has been very enjoyable and we we would be joining again one of their tours!

“ Out of the world whale tour. Saw a pack of 3 Orcas ”
I went to the Whale tour with Elding Adventures starting from Reykjavik Harbor. It completely exceeded all my expectations and I was left amazed at what I had seen. Within 15-20 minutes of leaving the shore we spotted a Minke whale. This was fun, and we followed it for a while! But the piece of cake was spotting a pack of 3 Orca Whales!! They were hunting together and soon we caught up-to them . Followed the Orcas from close up for an hour and a half. Saw them from within 100 m. The tour organizers were going crazy with excitement, apparently it is extremely rare to see 3 orcas hunting together like this, they say we had the luck of once in a ten year event. Oh what a day it was!! I was left amazed in wonder

“ Wale Watching ”
Four of us were on a four day tour of Iceland, included was a trip with Elding Adventure. The trip was a must see with both porpoises and wales with fantastic display by a hump back.
The staff were friendly and very informative giving an excellent commentary on the activity in the water.
On a personal basis I left my reading glasses on the boat, which they kindly phoned about and returned to the U.K.
