About this tour

On an annual basis, Preikestolen welcomes more visitors than any other trekking-destination in Norway. In 2016, approximately 300,000 hikers are expected to make their way up to the top of the imposing cliff that hangs 604 meters above the Lysefjord.

Outdoorlife Norway invites you to experience a unique Preikestolen hiking adventure, guaranteed to be crowd-free! Join us on a twilight hike to Preikestolen and catch the sun rising over the Lysefjord. You’ll start your adventure in the midst of darkness and walk with headlamps through the twilight of the night. After approximately 2.5 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Preikestolen where, after finding yourself a beautiful spot to relax, you’ll watch as the first deep orange beams of sunlight illuminate the steep mountain walls that tower over the Lysefjord. Long before the first tourist-packed busses arrive from Stavanger, you’ll be on your way back down the trail to conclude your unique hiking experience with a well-deserved breakfast at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge.

This is a moderately-demanding 6-hour, 8 kilometer hike with a total ascent of 500 meters. The duration of the tour is about 10-12.5 hours which includes transportation of approximately 1 hour each way and a post-hike rest with breakfast of 1 hour (depends on time of year, weather, and pick-up location).

  • After a very early-morning pick-up, your adventure will begin with a 40-minute ferry ride across an urban fjord. With a hot cup of coffee in hand, you’ll have ample time to wake up while viewing Stavanger’s waterfront from the water. Once ashore, your guide will transport you further to the base of the hiking trail. After a short briefing, you’ll embark on your journey to Preikestolen. You’ll begin your outdoor adventure in darkness, hiking with headlamps on trails that have recently been upgraded by Nepalese Sherpas. Hiking in the hushed silence of night is in itself an experience. Though animals are shy around people, it’s a certainty that they’ll be awake and alert, observing you from behind the old trees and scattered boulders that surround the trail. While the wildlife watches, your guide will lead you up through the shifting terrain, which includes bogs, forests, and glacier-scoured mountains.
  • After approximately 2.5 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the Preikestolen plateau just before sunrise. After finding yourself a comfortable place to relax, you’ll watch as the first beams of sunlight climb over the horizon and illuminate the Lysefjord’s steep mountain walls. While relaxing, you’ll have ample time to take photos and enjoy a warm beverage and snack atop Preikestolen. Long before the first tourist-packed busses arrive from Stavanger, you’ll be on your way back down the trail to conclude your unique hiking adventure with a well-deserved breakfast / lunch at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge.

Please check your phone the evening before the hike. You may choose between joining the rescheduled trip or getting a refund.
